Counters
When you count nouns like a number of things, people, times, animals, etc. In Korean, you need to use “counters”. Some counters work with the native Korean numbers and the Sino-Korean numbers.
Pattern to use counters: Noun + Number + Counter
For example,
1. 개 (Hard object, thing)
사과 한 개 (One apple) / 사과 두 개 (Two apples)
I have an apple = 나는 사과 한 개 (가지고)있어
How many mangos do you have? = 망고 몇 개 (가지고)있어?
2. 번 (Time)
실수 한 번 (One mistake) / 실수 세 번 (Three mistakes)
I did it one time = 나는 한 번 했어(요)
How many did you do it? = 몇 번 했어?
3. 명 (persons)
사람 한 명 (One person) / 사람 네 명 (Four people)
There is one person = 한 명 있어.
How many people are in the house? = 몇 명이 집에 있어?
Note :
When you use [하나] with another word, [하나] turns into [한].
When [둘] with another word, [둘] turns into [두].
셋 = 세
넷 = 네
스물 = 스무
*The meaning is the same, but the form is changed only to make it sound smooth and easy.
Counters that work with Native Korean Numbers
1. 살 (Age) => 서른 살 (Thirty years old)
2. 달 (Month) => 네 달 (Four months)
3. 주 (Week) => 한 주 (One week)
4. 시, 시간 (Hour) => 여섯 시 (Six o’clock), 여섯 시간 (Six hours)
5. 벌 (Clothes) => 양복 한 벌 (One suit)
6. 켤레 (Shoes, Socks) => 신발 한 켤레 (A pair of shoes), 양말 두 켤레 (A pair of socks)
7. 권 (Book) => 책 일곱 권 (Seven books)
8. 장 (Paper) => 여덟 장 (Eight papers)
9. 잔 (Glass), 컵 (Cup) => 물 한 잔 (A cup of water) / 물 두 컵 (Two cups of water)
10. 병 (Bottle) => 우유 두 병 (Two bottles of milk)
11. 캔 (Beer) => 맥주 네 캔 (Four cans of beer)
12. 대 (Transportation) => 비행기 한 대 (One airplane)
13. 척 (Ship) => 배 열 척 (Ten ships)
14. 채 (House) => 아파트 한 채 (One apartment)
15. 공기, 그릇 (Bowl) => 밥 두 공기 (Two bowls of rice) / 국 한 그릇 (A bowl of soup)
16. 접시 (Plate) => 망고 한 접시 (A plate of mango)
17. 조각/쪽 (Piece, Slice) => 피자 한 조각/쪽 (A piece of pizza)
18. 판 (Eggs) => 계란 한 판 (A carton of eggs)
19. 알 (Pills) => 수면제 두 알 (Two sleeping pills)
20. 그루 (Tree) => 나무 열 그루 (Ten trees)
21. 포기 (Cabbage) => 김치 한 포기 (A cabbage of kimchi)
